Mother's Day Gifts

Ma Martha, if you're reading this, please stop now!  You can come back and visit after you get your gift.  :-)

Every year, I always say that I'm going to make gifts for everyone, instead of buying.  I always ended up being too busy and just ended up buying something and spending too much money. Now that I'm no longer working, I want to be wise with money, but still be able to give a nice gift.  For this Mother's Day, I've been extra thrifty and have spent no more than $10 on each gift.  I don't feel cheap giving such inexpensive gifts because these gifts came from the heart and they're all beautiful to me as I'm sure they will be to the special mothers in my life.

I made this for one of my husband's grandmothers.  The board was the last one Hobby Lobby had and it was cracking in half so I asked for a discount and they gave me half-off.  Charles Gorilla-glued it back together and I painted it with a cream paint that was a Home Depot mistint sample that I got for 50 cent.  The rub on lettering was the most expensive part of this gift; at half off, it was around $5.  After I painted the board, I sanded it a little and then brushed over it with very black, strong coffee.  After waiting about 15 minutes, I wiped the excess off and then rinsed it.  To age it some more, I mixed some of the coffee with some satin poly and brushed that on.  It gave this piece a wonderful warm color and aged it just the right amount.

I've already blogged about this one.  This jewelry tray is for my Mother.  I actually had it out on the dining room table, waiting to put it away until I was ready to wrap it, when my parents came by.  My mom saw it and LOVED it.  Of course, I didn't tell her it was for her.

I've also already blogged about these.  These are for my husband's other grandmother, his mother and my sister.  One is for me.

These are for my sister-in-law.  I got everything at the dollar store.  This is actually one of my favorites because I already have something like these at my house.  I could kick myself for paying as much as I did for all of the stuff for mine when I could have gotten it for a few bucks.  Live and learn... live and learn.  I'm planning to do a post on these in the next few days so I can link them up next week.

  4. Could I be your momma for a day? I want one of everything! (I'd say two of everything but that would just sound greedy.)

We are celebrating Mother's Day a week late, since it's the only time we can all get together. I am also trying to make everything to save money, and because handmade gifts are the absolute best.

I look around my house at some of the stuff I paid full price for and just KICK myself. I could have saved SO much money if I had just wised up to the crafty goddess inside! ;)
