I sanded what I could, which took awhile because there were two coats of paint on it, washed it, primed it and painted it. Then I sanded the edges, decoupaged a sheet of scrapbook paper to the to the top and added a cute drawer knob from Hobby Lobby. I ended up with this:
Here it is in it's new home, holding the cookbooks I use most.

Thanks, guys! I got the soap box at Marshall's Home Goods. It was $13. I'm thinking about trying to make one out of my husband's wood scraps just to see if it can be done easily.
