Vacation season is approaching and I'm sure most people have already made their plans, but I wanted to tell you a little about Tybee Island. Tybee is a small island, 18 miles east of Savannah, GA. This is where we vacationed last summer. I had never heard of Tybee until a few years ago when I stumbled across some photos of this adorable cottage on Flickr.

Isn't it adorable???
Tybee is a great place for a relaxing family vacation. It's low-key which means there are no crazy tourist attractions like you might find in Myrtle Beach, which is where most people around here vacation. This also means that the traffic is bearable which is a plus in my book. One side of the island has the Atlantic Ocean and the other has the Savannah River. We stayed on the Savannah River side which meant no big waves to get knocked around in. The beach wasn't crowded and this was perfect for shell gathering. This also meant no aggressive seagulls trying to steal food.
We ate at two restaurants (AJ's Dockside Restaurant & Macelwee's Seafood Restaurant) while we were there and both were really good. Great atmosphere and great food. Because the island is so small, there are only about a dozen restaurants. This means that if you don't want a long wait, you better get there early. At Macelwee's, we only waited 5 minutes; at AJ's, we waited well over an hour. It was worth the wait though because we were able to eat outside, on the marina. Since Savannah is only a few minutes away, there are tons of dining options there too.
There is a small shopping district along the main road in Tybee and you can get some great one-of-a-kind gifts, many made by local artists.
Of course, there is Savannah too. If you plan to go to Tybee, make sure you block off at least a whole day for beautiful Savannah. There is so much I love about Savannah, that I'd have to do a whole other post on it, just to tell you about it.
