Chair Makeover

I found this chair at Goodwill a few weeks ago for $7.  Here's the before shot.
Don't you just love how many stickers they put on things?? The seat had at least five!

For this piece, I decided just to clean the chair and start painting it, without priming, since the finish was so dull.  Yeah, that didn't work out too well.  When I turned the chair over to paint the legs (after painting the top first - dumb), a little paint chipped off of the arms.  I thought, "No biggie, I'll just sand those spots and repaint."  That didn't work out too well either.  When I started sanding, the paint seemed to flake off.  I managed to touch that up, but in the end, I had to put a coat of polyurethane on the chair to protect it and save me the embarrassment of having a guest sit in it and finding that their watch or bracelet is chipping the paint off the arms of my chair.

I thought I'd be saving time by not priming, but I ended up using four coats of paint and a coat of the poly.  Lesson learned from this:  Prime the piece no matter how dull the finish seems!

Anywho, here's my after:
My camera skills are still pretty lame so I have crappy photos...  sorry!

The fabric I chose for the seat seems kind of burlapy (yes, I just made that word up) with the damask pattern in a kind of velvety texture.  It's beautiful!  Lucky for me I have some left for another project I have in mind.
